The problem

Recording the lesson is the fast part. Turning it into course material is not.

Published industry benchmarks put course production in the tens of hours per finished hour of teaching — before a single quiz question is written.

Intro to Photosynthesis

Real engine output · 9 min lesson · 5 workbook sections · 6 quiz questions

Example

01Understanding Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is a crucial biological process used by plants, algae, and certain bacteria to transform light energy into chemical energy. This transformation is vital as it introduces energy into the Earth's ecosystem, primarily in the form of glucose, which supports life. The core chemical reaction involves six molecules of carbon dioxide combining with six molecules of water. In the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, these reactants produce glucose and release oxygen as a by-product. This process occurs within the chloroplasts, cellular structures that house the thylakoid membranes, where the initial light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis take place.

Exercise: List and describe the main components involved in the process of photosynthesis.

02The Light-dependent Reactions

The first step of photosynthesis involves reactions that require light, aptly named the light-dependent reactions. These occur within the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts. Chlorophyll, the primary pigment involved, absorbs light mainly in the blue and red wavelengths, reflecting green light, which is why plants appear green. This absorbed energy facilitates the splitting of water molecules, a process known as photolysis. Photolysis results in the liberation of oxygen and the formation of energy carriers such as ATP and NADPH, which are essential for the next phase of photosynthesis.

Exercise: Explain how light energy is converted into chemical energy during the light-dependent reactions.

03The Calvin Cycle

Following the light-dependent reactions, the Calvin cycle, or light-independent reactions, occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast. In this stage, carbon dioxide is incorporated into organic molecules through a process known as carbon fixation. The enzyme RuBisCO catalyzes the attachment of carbon dioxide to a five-carbon sugar. The ATP and NADPH produced during the light-dependent reactions are then used to synthesize glucose, providing a stable energy source for the plant.

Exercise: Outline the steps of the Calvin cycle and the role of RuBisCO in this process.

04Factors Affecting Photosynthesis

Several environmental factors impact the rate of photosynthesis. Light intensity plays a major role; as light intensity increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis, up to a point where another factor becomes limiting. Similarly, carbon dioxide concentration affects photosynthesis, with higher levels facilitating increased rates of reaction until saturation. Temperature also influences photosynthesis, as enzymes like RuBisCO operate optimally within a specific temperature range. Beyond around 40°C, these enzymes can denature, causing the photosynthesis rate to decline.

Exercise: Design an experiment to test how one factor, such as light intensity, affects the rate of photosynthesis.

05The Importance of Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is not just a plant process; it is the cornerstone of life on Earth. It is responsible for the oxygen that makes up about 21% of our atmosphere, supporting aerobic respiration in most organisms. Furthermore, it forms the base of food chains. The energy stored in glucose acts as a source of fuel for plants and, indirectly, for all other life forms that consume plants. Understanding photosynthesis allows us to appreciate the intricate balance and interdependence within ecosystems.

Exercise: Discuss how photosynthesis contributes to ecological balance and the sustainability of life on Earth.

We built Coursewright because we were the ones losing weekends turning recorded lessons into workbooks.

We're an early team in Paris, so we won't put invented logos or customer counts on this page. What we can show you is the engine: the kit above came out of a real run, and the live demo will make a new one for you right now.

If it saves you the weekend, tell us what to fix next — we answer every email.
